Birthday Special: Celebrating dream girl Hema Malini's 7 most memorable roles!

1. Dream Girl: This one has to be the most cherished movie title in the list. It was during the mid 70’s when Hema Malini was endowed with the title of ‘Dream girl’ by her fans. It was in 1977, that she starred in the movie with the same name opposite her husband Dharmendra. Hema ji played five different characters in this movie where she was again cast opposite her real life love, Dharmendra. Dream Girl truly does sum up the magnetic charm that Hema Malini personifies.

2. Sholay: Hema's role of Basanti in Sholay has to be one of the most memorable characters in Bollywood history. Hema Malini’s superb comic timing, her adorable conversations with her horse Dhanno and the filmi 'Naach Basanti’ dance for Gabbar. Though there were big names like Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar associated with the film, ‘Sholay’ would have been incomplete without the lovely ‘Basanti’ and her antics.

3. Seeta Geeta: Her versatility and her vivaciousness shines so bright in the film as she effortlessly plays two twin sisters with completely different personalities who swap places. One can never get enough of watching the carefree, bubbly, super fun and rather brash Geeta who’s a street performer and has a blast teaching Seeta’s evil aunt a lesson.

4. Baghban: In 2003, Hema Malini starred opposite the megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the family drama - ‘Baghban’. Hema Malini looked convincing yet pretty in the role of a mother, and her pairing with Amitabh Bachchan garnered a lot of appreciation.

5. Satte Pe Satta: This movie was about seven uncivilized and unkempt brothers living on a farm. She played the role of a nurse, Indu, who tries to humanize the crazy brothers.

6. Lal Pathar: In this film Hema Malini very courageously took up a negative character which very few of her contemporaries would dare to attempt.

7. Andaz: After impressing the audience with her brilliant act in ‘Johny Mera Naam’, Hema Malini gave one of her finest performances in ‘Andaz’. The challenging role of a widow was carried out effortlessly by Hema. The presence of superstar Rajesh Khanna and Shammi Kapoor, didn’t overshadow her role in the film. This romantic flick gave Hema Malini the much needed exposure.

Hema Malini turns 66, wants quiet birthday

She says she looks back at her journey with 'affection'. "I was supposed to be in my constituency Mathura. But it's impossible for me to travel right now. So this birthday is being spent with family in Mumbai, and that means Esha and her husband Bharat.
My younger daughter Ahana was supposed to join me in Mathura from Delhi where she lives. And Dharamji (Dharmendra) is in New Zealand to attend a function. So, he is not here with me this birthday," Hema said.

The actress of 'Sholay', 'Seeta Aur Geeta' and 'Dream Girl' fame, has been traveling incessantly of late.

"At the beginning of October, I was shooting for Ramesh Sippy's 'Shimla Mirch' for two days. Then on October 3, I had to rush to Kanpur for a function. The organizers were kind enough to arrange a private jet," she said.

"From Delhi, I flew straight to Mumbai in time for Karva Chauth (Oct 11). I was scheduled to be in Mathura with my constituents for my birthday. But I can't travel any more right now. I'm exhausted. I just wanted a quiet birthday," said the Bharatiya Janata Party's Lok Sabha member from Mathura.

Hema wants to thank her fans for being with her for so many years.

"I don't know what people saw in me. But I've only received love and respect from within the film industry and from my fans. I look back with a lot of affection at all the films that I've done. If you ask me to single out one film, it would have to be Gulzar saab's 'Meera'," she said.

That was the Dream Girl's dream role. "I wish Lataji had sung for me in 'Meera'. That will remain the one regret of my career. I even requested her personally. But she had her own reasons for not singing in 'Meera'," she said.

Whatever bitterness transpired at that time is now washed away. Today Hema and Lata are mutual fans.

"She gifts me the most beautiful saris. I've been wanting to gift her one. But getting the right fabric and design for Lata-ji is not easy. I've finally managed it," she said.

Deepika Padukone gets her father to act

Deepika Padukone has shot for a print ad with the sports legend for a private bank, which will soon be flashed in the media.

A source said, “The father-daughter duo feature in a print ad for a private bank. The reserved and soft-spoken Prakash Padukone is camera shy and it took Deepika a while to make him comfortable."

Recounting Padukone senior’s humility, another source said, “I had seen him at the registrar’s office in Bandra where he completed the registration formalities for Deepika’s house but not even once did he flaunt his status. He stood there patiently till his turn came for the verification process."

The list of celebrities who have earlier shot for commercials with their respective fathers includes Sonam Kapoor and Salman Khan.

Hema Malini to spend 66th birthday with family

'Boyhood' inspired me to watch world cinema: Varun Dhawan

"It took 12 years for the director to make this film. I have seen the film and I loved it... This film inspired me to watch world cinema. All kinds of films help an actor to grow. I don't see any difference between commercial or art cinema -- a film is a film," Varun Dhawan told reporters before the screening of 'Boyhood' at Cinemax, Versova.

He was accompanied on Wednesday at the 16th MAMI film festival with his Badlapur director Sriram Raghavan.

'Boyhood' is directed by Richard Linklater.

Talking about the length of the film, he said: "When I was watching the film, I didn't know when it came to an end. You don't feel its lengthy. Sriram always says a film is as lengthy as it seems."

The ongoing 16th MAMI film festival which started on Tuesday will continue till 21st October.

Coalgate: SC refuses to restrain coal companies from trading fossil fuel

“These companies were given 6 months' time and we cannot direct them not to excavate coal during the period,” stated the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court  last month scrapped the allocation of 214 out of 218 coal blocks to various companies since 1993 terming it as ‘fatally flawed’.

Allowing the Centre to take over operation of 42 cancelled blocks which are functional, the Apex Court gave a six month breather to the remaining blocks to wind up their operations.

The Apex Court said that the beneficiaries of the illegal process ‘must suffer’ the consequences and refused to show sympathy to private companies which submitted that Rs 2.87 lakh crores have been invested in 157 coal blocks and Rs 4 lakh crores in end-use plants.

Wednesday's order covering allocations made by various governments including Congress, NDA and UPA between 1993 and 2010 will pave the way for the Centre to put the remaining 172 blocks for auction.

A bench headed by Chief Justice RM Lodha said that its judgement is intended to correct the wrong done by the Centre over the years and to send a message to Government not to deal with the natural resources as if they belong to a few individuals who can fritter them away at their sweet will.

It, however, saved from the "guillotine" four allocations one each to SAIL and NTPC and two blocks to Sasan Power Limited owned by Anil Ambani's Reliance Power and also gave a six months breathing time to rest of them to wind up their operations by March 31, 2015.

'India Rivers Week' to be observed

A statement said the first ever "India Rivers Week, 2014" will be observed as a national event in New Delhi Nov 24-27.

"A recent appraisal has found that there is no river in any of the top 50 cities in the country, which is not sick or dying with river Yamuna in Delhi-Mathura-Agra and Ganga in Kanpur-Varanasi-Patna leading the list," the statement said.

The river week is being jointly organised by WWF India, INTACH, South Asian Network on Dams River and People, Toxics Link and PEACE Institute Charitable Trust, along with Arghyam (Bangalore), International Rivers (Mumbai office), and Peoples Science Institute, Dehradun.

Westernised education concept dealt a blow to Indian culture: Rajnath Singh

Singh, while addressing a gathering at the Chopsani Schools centenary celebrations here said the main objective of the education is "comprehensive development of the personality" and lamented that the present education system was not fulfilling this objective.

Holding the westernised educational concept brought in by the Britishers, Singh said "this education system has dealt a severe blow to the values and culture of the country, for which, India has been recognised across the globe."

Terming Indian culture to be unparallelled, Singh said only Indian culture and value model is such rich and holistic that it thinks not only about the human being but everything on the earth, be it lifeless.

The Union minister said everyone has unique talent and ability and there was a need to provide an opportunity to them.

"Unfortunately everyone does not have access to this opportunity," he said while assuring that his government would provide the opportunity to all to identify and harness the talents and abilities of the students in the interest of the nation.

Singh said that we will have to realise the malicious intentions of nipping this value and cultural model behind introducing this westernised educational model and never treat us as inferior, which the education system of present time seem to be instilling in the new generations.

Avoiding a direct criticism of Congress, Singh said that since independence, what Indian have got, was assurances only.

"Had these assurances converted into reality, the country would have been a recognised super power and a prosperous nation," he said.

AERB sets 2015 deadline for additional safety measures in Nuclear plants

After the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan, an extensive audit was carried out by Board (AERB) and three categories of safety protocols were mandated for nuclear installations here - short term, mid-term and long-term, Board Chairman S S Bajaj said.

The short and mid-term measures have been completed and the long-term measures would also be met, he told reporters after inaugurating the '31st Safety and Occupational Health Professionals Meet' on Bharathiya Nabhikiya Vidhyuth Nigam (BHAVINI) premises at Kalpakkam in Kancheepuram on Wednesday.

Referring to the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, BHAVINI Chairman Prabhath Kumar said complying with safety norms was seen to be more pressing than achieving criticality.

These have to be complied with, and only then can the loading of the 500MW PFBR with Liquid Sodium commence,he said.

He said phases attending the loading include synchronization of conventional auxiliary systems followed by switch yard for power transmission. These would follow in a phased manner and criticality itself can be attained in six months time, he added.

BHAVINI, a public sector undertaking of the Department of Atomic Energy, has built the PFBR at Kalpakkam, 60 km from Chennai.

Ford’s Fiesta diesel range has it all: great looks, amazing driving attributes and a healthy regard for your pocket.

Ford Fiesta front tracking The Ford Fiesta is still one of the best cars Ford has ever produced, and is currently our reigning supermini class champion.  And every model in its range still manages to eclipse rivals like the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo thanks to its sleek looks, sparkling driving experience, low running costs and practical cabin.

The Fiesta has certainly helped Ford stay top of the UK’s new car sales chart, with its competitive pricing, attractive finance plans and generous equipment levels across the range.  And what’s more it has a good choice of economical diesel engines to choose from too.  Ford’s latest 74bhp 1.5TDCi puts out 185Nm of torque and emits 98g/kms of Co2 and is available on all but the Zetec S and Titanium X models.  Or opt for the more powerful and punchier 1.6 TDCI  94bhp which gives you an extra 15Nm of torque to play with at 200Nm and it has slightly lower emissions - 95g/km .

This diesel engine option is available across the whole range excluding Fiesta’s sporty ST models.  But if you want the most economical and frugal Fiesta diesel, plump for our favourite Ford’s very popular ECOnetic model.  Automatic stop/start technology is standard so reduces the Co2 to just 85g/kms making it one of the cleanest superminis in its class.  And with no road tax to pay on any of the Fiesta diesel models its also one of the cheapest to run.

The Fiesta diesel comes in both three and five-door guises and depending of which model you choose gets a host of standard equipment such as body-coloured heated door mirrors, manual air-conditioning, electric front windows and a CD radio with USB connection.  The Fiesta diesel also boasts seven airbags, which helps give it a five-star Euro NCAP rating.

However the Ford Fiesta isn’t perfect: the interior is still blighted by some cheap plastics, and while its entry price of £13,695 for the Style 1.5TDCi is tempting, the figure can rise quickly when you start adding some of the optional safety equipment. But whichever Ford Fiesta diesel you go for, the baby Ford is a talented all-rounder that stands head and shoulders above the rest of the supermini class.

Few superminis can rival the Ford Fiesta for style and street cred. A rakish profile and bold details mean it packs plenty of visual punch – but Ford’s trademark gaping grille looks a little heavy-handed in this case.

2015 Ford Figo sedan teased in Brazil as the Ka+

Ford Figo Sedan 11
Close on the heels of the unveiling of the Ford Ka hatchback, Ford has teased the Ka+ sedan through a series of photographs. The Ka+ will be sold in India as the Figo sedan, albeit with a sub-four-metre length. Interestingly, the production-ready Figo sedan doesn’t differ too much from its concept form that was shown at the 2014 Auto Expo.

The headlamps have retained their shape, however, the detailing is simpler than the LED laden unit on the concept. Ditto for the taillights. The interiors too are similar in theme to the layout displayed on the Figo sedan concept.

Ford’s cell-phone inspired centre console design finds its way into this model too and expect the infotainment to come with SYNC technology even though the Figo sedan will be the carmaker’s entry-level sedan offering. The instrumentation comes across as a simple three-pot design. The all-black interiors look quite smart at least in the teaser images...

Azentus Capital bets automaker Maruti to ride growth in India's economy

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is best placed to benefit from an improvement in India's economy as it attracts first-time car buyers, Morgan Sze, founder and chief investment officer of hedge fund Azentus Capital Management, said on Thursday.

Sze, a former Goldman Sachs top trader and now one of the best known Asian hedge fund managers, said the Indian economy is stabilising and last month's election results have helped improve chances of an acceleration in growth.

India auto industry is also "currently poised for a cyclical upturn", Sze told hedge fund managers at the Sohn/Karen Leung Foundation Conference Hong Kong. He did not say whether the fund was invested in Martui Suzuki.

Picking Maruti Suzuki as his best bet, the Hong Kong-based fund manager predicted a 28 percent annualised growth in the automaker's earnings over the next three years. Maruti Suzuki dominates the market with a 42 percent share.

Sze said Maruti also benefits from India's diesel price deregulation because a majority of its cars run on petrol-fuelled engines. He also said its valuations are attractive and the company is best placed to attract first time buyers.

Maruti trades at 20 times its forward 12 months earnings and its share price has risen about 40 percent so far this year, nearly double the returns in India's benchmark Sensex index.

Of the 48 analysts covering Maruti, 37 rate it as a buy, according to data from Thomson Reuters StarMine.

Sze's multi-strategy hedge fund mainly focuses on companies related to Asia. It gained about 16 percent last year but its assets fell to less than $1 billion, according to its March filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, following a 6.8 percent loss in 2011 and just 1 percent gain in 2012. It earlier managed about $2 billion.

Toyota recalls 2.27million cars over defective airbag that could explode - and Honda and Nissan could be affected too

Toyota is asking 766,000 U.S. owners affected by last year's recall to have airbag inflators replaced, and is recalling 2.27million vehicles worldwide over fears the parts could explodeToyota is recalling 2.27million vehicles worldwide over fears a faulty airbag inflator could explode.

The company said it was notifying owners of vehicles involved in a 2013 safety recall, including 766,300 in the U.S., to replace airbag inflators.

Previously, it asked dealers to inspect the airbags and only replaced those judged to be faulty.

The recall involves about 20 Toyota models, including some Corolla compacts and Tundra pickups made in 2003-2004 and some 2002-2004 Lexus SC 430 coupes.

Of the total number of vehicles affected by the current recall, 650,000 are in Japan and 1.62million in the rest of the world.

Toyota said it was expanding the recall it announced in April 2013 that involved 2.1million vehicles because the serial numbers that parts maker Takata had provided were incomplete.

Nissan and Honda are also investigating whether to recall more vehicles after parts maker Takata admitted that it had not fully identified the flawed components during a 2013 recall...

Toyota expands recall for air bag glitches affecting a total 2.27 million vehicles worldwide

Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling nearly 650,000 vehicles in Japan and repeating a recall for problems with front passenger air bag inflators announced last year, seeking to fix some 2.27 million vehicles.

The company, the world's biggest automaker, said Wednesday that it was "renotifying" owners of some vehicles involved in a 2013 safety recall of 2.14 million vehicles. It said the initial recall was based on incomplete serial numbers from the part supplier, Japan's Takata Corp.

The inflators contained improperly made propellant that could cause them to work abnormally, and possibly cause fires, in case of a crash. Toyota said it had received one report of a burn on a seat cover from faulty air bag deployment.

The recall involves about 20 Toyota models, including some Corolla compacts and Tundra pickups made in 2003-2004 and some 2002-2004 Lexus SC 430 coupes made in the U.S. The models being recalled in Japan were made in 2000-2003.

Toyota has been striving to restore its reputation for quality after a slew of big recalls and safety problems...
