Land Rover Freelander to Continue Life Under Tata Nameplate

Land Rover Freelander 3With the aging Land Rover Freelander set to be replaced at the end of the year, you would expect owner Tata Motors to trash the whole project and look towards the future. But the automaker has other plans in mind — it wants to recycle the Freelander and give it a Tata badge.

According to a report from Autocar, the new Freelander-based SUV will be part of the automaker’s class growth in the Indian market. With a new Discovery taking the place of the Freelander in the Land Rover lineup elsewhere, the Tata SUV will get a new body and minor enhancements before hitting dealerships sometime in 2016.

Codenamed the Q5 (yes, like the Audi), the Tata SUV will come in both five and seven seat options, and will reportedly maintain Jaguar Land Rover’s standard of quality when it goes on sale in the Indian market, and elsewhere.

The Tata Q5 will also mark the automaker’s first venture into the premium space, with the SUV reportedly starting at £20,000 ($33,000) when it goes on sale in the next two years...
