Piaggio to enter quadricycle segment

वेस्पा स्कूटर और छोटे वाणिज्यिक वाहन बनाने वाली कंपनी पियाजियो क्वाड्रीसाइकल के बाजार में भी उतर सकती है।

फिलहाल इस बाजार में सिर्फ बजाज ऑटो ने ही कदम रखा है और कुछ माह में 'आरई60 स्वाड्रीसाइकल' लांच करने वाली है। इसमें 200 सीसी लिक्विड कूल्ड फोर-स्ट्रोक इंजन दिया जाने वाला है।

हालांकि पियाजियो ने अपनी प्रस्तावित क्वाड्रीसाइकल के बारे में विस्तार से जानकारी नहीं दी है, लेकिन हाल में आयोजित हुए ऑटो शो में कंपनी ने इसका कॉन्सेप्ट मॉडल प्रदर्शित किया था।

गौरतलब है कि भारत सरकार ने यात्री परिवहन और भार-वहन के लिए क्वाड्रीसाइकल को मंजूरी देने की पूरी तैयारी कर ली है। इसके लिए नीति निर्माण का काम अंतिम चरण में है।

हीरो मोटोकॉर्प ज्यादा से ज्यादा बाइक्स में 'आई3एस स्टॉप सिस्टम' लाने पर काम कर रही है। यह तकनीक ईंधन की किफायत को और बढ़ा देती है।

इस तकनीक में बाइक में स्टार्ट और स्टॉप बटन दिए जाते हैं। इसे स्टार्ट करने के बाद जब भी बाइक का इंजन कुछ सेकंड से ज्यादा रुका रहता है, तो वह बंद हो जाता है। ट्रैफिक सिग्नल वगैरह पर बाइक रुकने पर यह काम करता है। जब चालक एक्सीलरेटर को पुश करता है, तो बाइक खुद-ब-खुद स्टार्ट हो जाती है। इसका खास मकसद ईंधन की किफायत को बढ़ाना है। साथ ही यह कार्बन एमिशन को कम करता है।

GM adds 970700 newer cars to switch recall

अमेरिकी ऑटोमोबाइल दिग्गज जनरल मोटर्स (जीएम) अपनी कारों के इग्निशन सिस्टम में खामी के चलते आठ लाख 24 हजार कारें वापस लेगी। इस खराबी के कारण अब तक 30 दुर्घटनाओं में 12 लोगों की मौत हो चुकी है।

पिछले महीने भी जीएम ने 16 लाख कारें वापस लेने की घोषणा की थी। कंपनी पर सवाल उठे थे कि जीएम को इन कारों में जिस गड़बड़ी की जानकारी वर्ष 2001 से ही है उसे अब तक ठीक क्यों नहीं किया गया है।

इस मामले में कंपनी का कहना है कि इग्निशन की खराबी से जुड़ी दुर्घटनाओं में किसी की मौत नहीं हुई है। नई घोषणा के तहत कंपनी वर्ष 2008-2010 मॉडल की शेवरले कोबाल्ट्स, एचएचआर, पोंटियाक सोल्सिटेस, जी5 और सैटर्न स्काइ वापस लेगी। इसके अलावा वर्ष 2005-2007 मॉडल की खराब इग्निशन वाली 90,000 कारें भी वापस ली जाएंगी।

जीएम के सीईओ मैरी बैरे ने कहा कि कंपनी सुरक्षा के मामले में कोताही नहीं करेगी। हजारों रिटेलरों के जरिये बेचे गए 22 लाख वाहनों में कुछ हजार खराब स्विचों की पहचान करना मुश्किल है। इसलिए सभी वाहन वापस लिए जा रहे हैं। जनरल मोटर्स के खिलाफ इस मामले में अमेरिकी न्याय विभाग और कांग्रेस की जांच चल रही है।

कंपनी ने स्वीकार किया है कि उसने इग्निशन संबंधी गड़बड़ी के मामले में जरूरी कार्रवाई नहीं की। इन खामियों की वजह से अब तक सैकड़ों दुर्घटनाएं हो चुकी हैं।

खराबी का नतीजा

वर्ष 2005 से अब तक कंपनी को इस गड़बड़ी को लेकर ग्राहकों की सैकड़ों शिकायतें मिल चुकी हैं। इस गड़बड़ी के कारण इग्निशन ड्राइविंग के दौरान अचानक ऑफ पोजीशन में आ जाता है और एयरबैग सहित सभी इलेक्ट्रॉनिक सिस्टम बंद हो जाते हैं। जीएम इस मामले में कानूनी मुकदमें का सामना भी कर रही है।

Ford to launch mustang in india this year

फोर्ड की लोकप्रिय कार 'मस्तंग' की 50वीं सालगिरह के मौके पर कंपनी इसे भारत में लांच करने की योजना बना रही है। यह पहली बार होगा, जब फोर्ड मस्तंग को किसी राइट-हैंड ड्राइव बाजार में उतारा जाएगा।

फोर्ड के मुताबिक भारत में मस्तंग को पसंद करने वालों की संख्या बहुत ज्यादा है। कंपनी की योजना राइट-हैंड ड्राइव बाजारों में भी इस कार को बेहतरीन डिजाइन और दमखम को प्रदर्शित करने वाली खूबियों के साथ उतारने की है।

वर्ष 1965 में पहली मस्तंग कार से लेकर अभी तक की सभी कारों में स्पोर्ट्सबैक कूपे डिजाइन, तीन वर्टिकल टेल लाइट्स, घोड़े का लोगो और बो-डाउन फ्रंट डिजाइन दी जा रही है।

Ford Everest Finally Makes a Revamped Return

A decade after the series was first launched in 2004, US automaker Ford has finally decided to roll out an all-new version of its Everest sport utility vehicle.

The concept car of the all-new Ford Everest was revealed during the opening of the Bangkok International Motor Show 2014 in Thailand on Tuesday. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) debut of the Ford Everest Concept followed its global launch in Sydney in August 2013.

“But this time we’ve already decided to produce this Everest concept car in the future,” said Dave Schoch, president of Ford Asia Pacific.

“The Ford Everest Concept shows the bold new direction that we envision for a mid-size, seven-seat SUV that has been designed for Asean and global markets,” added Matt Bradley, president of Ford Asean.

The car will also be produced in Thailand’s factories as Ford sales in Asean have become the third-largest after China and India for the Asia-Pacific region.

“Extending Ford’s unsurpassed heritage of creating class-defining SUVs, the Everest Concept features a stunning design that hints at its toughness and exceptional capability, building on the versatility of the current Everest. And, like the current Everest, the production version of this next-generation SUV will be built right here in Thailand,” Schoch said.

Ford does not have strategic plans of moving its manufacturing plants to Indonesia, despite Thailand’s recent political unrest and the investment of prominent carmakers in the archipelago, such as Chevrolet, which built factory for its Spin series in Bekasi, West Java, last year.

“Presently, there is no plan to manufacture in Indonesia, but we are constantly looking at the situation and opportunities for development in Indonesia, because we know the Indonesian car market is big,” Schoch said.

The Ford Everest Concept builds on Ford’s SUV expertise and is aimed squarely at the global utility market, which grew 13 percent in 2013. Thanks to its global strengths and growing lineup of products, Ford outpaced this rapidly growing segment in 2013, selling 1.2 million utility vehicles; the figure marks a 35 percent increase from the previous year.

A vehicle like the Ford Everest Concept will strengthen Ford’s utility offering in the fast-growing Asean region, and comes after the introduction in the region of the all-new Ford EcoSport, a class-defining urban SUV.

Ford Everest Concept is the latest proof of Ford’s regional design and engineering capabilities, as it creates world-class vehicles for markets in Asia Pacific and around the world.

“The Everest Concept represents our vision of a global Ford vehicle with regional heritage that will allow customers to take on the world,” Bradley said. “It shows how we continue to implement an ongoing product-led transformation and further expand our showrooms across the Asean region.”

Maruti to supply new Swift hybrids to government

Maruti Suzuki is all set to supply an undisclosed number of production-ready Swift hybrid hatchbacks, named Swift Range Entender, to the government as a part of its pilot project. However, the due to upcoming elections, the dates are not yet clear, a source close to the project told Autocar Professional. There would be more clarity on the project by the first quarter of the next financial year ie (financial year 2015), he said.
Maruti Suzuki had showcased this ‘green’ Swift at the Auto Expo 2014. The company will provide the government with these hybrid Swifts in financial year 2015.

He further added, “While the homologation process of the hybrid Swift is nearly completed, the team is expecting ARAI certification anytime now.

The new Swift Range Extender will run on an inline three-cylinder, 658cc petrol engine (borrowed from Suzuki, Japan). It is also equipped with a front-axle mounted 55KW electric motor, which is powered by a 5kWh lithium ion battery.  According to company sources, while the production-ready model has been developed in India, all the major electric gear (such as the electric motor, battery and other components) required for this project were imported from Japan and other countries.

The Swift hybrid model is around 130kg heavier than its conventional petrol-engined counterpart currently sold in India, which weighs between 960-990kg (kerb weight). Maruti’s internal tests claim that the Swift Range Extender offers a combined fuel efficiency of up to 48.2km per litre, which includes a 25.5km run powered by the fully-charged battery.

The battery, according to company data, takes nearly 90 minutes to get fully charged. While the company (along with other OEMs such as Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, TVS Motor Co and others) is eagerly waiting for the implementation of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020, it is known that the Department of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises has written to the Finance Ministry seeking a grant of Rs. 230-300 crore to kick-start a series of pilot projects (public transportation through electric vehicles) from April 2014. Though the commercial production of the Swift hybrid hatchbacks would depend on the status of the said pilot project(s), the battery operated variants would be possibly seen on the Indian roads later this year....

Jaguar Land Rover production capacity will hit 7 lakh units by FY 2017, analysts say

Jaguar Land Rover will scale up its production capacity to hit 700,000 units by financial year 2017 riding on its joint ventures in China and Brazil, say analysts.

JLR's capacity for the current year is pegged at 450,000 units, with Jaguar's capacity at 85,000 and Land Rover's capacity at 350,000 -370,000 units.

The company's Solihull plant in the UK has a capacity of 200,000 units which mainly produces the Range Rover (RR), RR Sport, Discovery and Defender.

Currently, JLR is "facing supply constraint in Discovery, thereby, leading to muted sales for the same," said Surjit Arora, analyst with Mumbai-based equity research firm Prabhudas Lilladher. "Capacity constraint would be sorted out only by the second half of FY15 where the small Jaguar or Baby Jag would be produced on the all-new aluminium architecture. At the same time, with some de-bottlenecking, the capacity could be augmented by 30,000-40,000 units. By end FY15, the overall capacity at JLR is pegged to be around 5,00,000 units," he added.

JLR's China JV with Chery Automobile would commence operations in FY16. "The total capacity over the next three years at the JV level is pegged at 110,000-130,000 units," said the report by Prabhudas Lilladher.

"As import duty in China is currently pegged at 30-50%, setting up a plant in China would lead to savings, which according to the company, would lead to lower prices for its vehicles (est. at 15%). The company would assemble Freelander and Evoque in China, whereas, RR and RR Sport (premium products) would continue to be produced in UK facilities," said Arora...

Maruti working on 1.0L turbo petrol engine to power upcoming YRA premium hatchback

Not long after Tata Motors announced the 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron petrol engine for its upcoming products, Maruti Suzuki is apparently set to follow suit with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine of its own. However, Maruti’s new engine is expected to be a direct injected unit compared to Tata’s MPFI. After the AMT, this motor is touted to be the next big hit for Maruti.

Financial Express reports that, according to its industry sources, the direct injection turbocharged petrol motor in question will first power the automaker’s global premium hatchback codenamed YRA that is under development. The YRA is likely to be positioned above the Swift taking the competition straight towards the likes of VW Polo and the new Honda Jazz. The new car is also expected to be Maruti’s leading export model.

With the new fuel economy norm by the government on its way, the turbocharged petrol motor with high fuel efficiency and low emission would come in handy. This move also aligns with the global downsizing trend. Given that Maruti already has the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) technology in hand, we can safely say that the company is looking forward for a promising future!

The new motor, codenamed K10C is said to have an impressive power output of 90 HP which is better than that of the conventional normally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol units in the market. GM India launches updated Cruze priced at `13.7 lakh
General Motors India Pvt. Ltd on Tuesday launched an updated version of its Chevrolet Cruze sedan, priced between Rs.13.7 lakh and Rs.16.19 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

“The Cruze has received an overwhelming response from consumers across India since its launch in 2009 and continues to be the largest-selling Chevrolet nameplate globally,” General Motors India vice-president (sales, marketing and after sales) Rajesh Singh said in a statement. The updated Chevrolet Cruze, with all new automatic transmission, delivers improved fuel economy and also provides turn indicators on outside rear view mirrors, both of which are crucial for Indian road conditions, he added.

The updated 2014 Chevrolet Cruze comes with both a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission mated to the turbocharged 2-litre VCDi engine, the company said.

The car comes with newly designed front and rear bumpers, new dual headlamps, alloy wheels and fog lamps, it added.

Bentley to start manufacturing W12 engines at its Crewe facility


Bentley-W12Engine3Bentley, the largest producer of 12 cylinder engines globally has announced that its Crewe headquarters will start production of W12 motors by the end of this year. Currently the W12 engines are made and shipped from Germany; these are then installed in its Continental and other models from the Volkswagen group.

The move to UK will see Bentley export engines for the first time in its illustrious history. The Crewe based manufacturer expects to produce 9000 engines per annum. This shift will add another 100 jobs to the automobile industry in UK which already employs 1,42,000 people across businesses and is worth around 11.2 billion pounds.

Wolfgang Schreiber, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors, said: “This is an important step, not just for Bentley but also for the UK manufacturing sector. This W12 centre of excellence is recognition of the long standing engine manufacturing expertise we have that has resulted in performance improvements across the model ranges over recent years. BMW To Build 100,000 i Models Per Year By 2020

Yamaha's new YZF-R15 special edition, new FZ-S coming soon

Previously seen at the Auto Expo in Delhi this year, Yamaha plans to launch a special edition of the YZF-R15 featuring black and gold livery along with the addition of a grey colour option. The YZF-R15 will continue to be powered by a 149.8cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder and liquid-cooled engine, generating 16.8bhp of maximum power at 8500rpm while peak torque of 1.5kgm is made at 7500rpm.

Hit hard by poor sales, Nissan India to scale down target for FY16

Nissan Motors has launched Datsun GO small car in India at a competitive price of Rs 3.12 lakh.Hit hard by the poor sales in the current fiscal, coupled with the uncertainty over the demand pick up in the near future, Nissan India on Thursday said that the company will revise its stated target of achieving 10% market share by 2016.

The company admits that it is difficult to achieve the said target of 10% in the expected 5 million TIV (total industry volume) in the 2016 fiscal due to the ongoing slowdown in the Indian passenger car market, said Kenichiro Yomura, president, Nissan India operations and managing director and CEO of Nissan Motor India.

In response to a query, Yomura, who was in Chennai to announce the launch of the Datsun Go, said: “We are revising our mid-term target of 10% market share in India by 2016 fiscal. Given the current market conditions, the company feels that it is difficult to achieve the said target, however, the company is confident of achieving the same in a year or two after 2016.”

Even the industry cannot achieve the 5 million units target by 2016 fiscal given the current market conditions, he pointed out. “While we continue to be bullish on the export front with lakh plus vehicles per annum to over 100 countries,” he pointed out. ..

Hyundai launches a new GL variant for Rs 7.17 lakh

The petrol GL variant is powered by a 1.4 litre VTVT engine, whereas the diesel GL is powered by a 1.4 litre CRDI unit. South korean automotive manufacturer Hyundai has introduced a new GL variant for its Fluidic Verna sedan, priced at Rs 7.17 lakh.

The petrol GL variant is powered by a 1.4 litre VTVT engine, whereas the diesel GL is powered by a 1.4 litre CRDI unit. Now with the introduction of the GL variant, the sedan’s oil-burner range starts at Rs 8.35 lakh, while the petrol range starts at Rs 7.17 lakh.

The 1.4 litre VTVT engine in the petrol GL variant produces 105bhp and 138Nm of torque, while the 1.4-litre CRDI engine in the diesel GL produces 89bhp and 224Nm of torque. Both the engines send power to the front wheel and while the petrol gets a five-speed manual gearbox, the diesel gets a six-speed unit. The GL variants come with a very basic equipment list with keyless entry and a 2-Din Audio system among others.

Besides the addition of a new variant, Hyundai has also revamped Verna’s variant lineup. Hyundai has discontinued six of Verna’s variants of which, three are diesel and the other three petrols. The 1.6 litre VTVT powered Automatic variants of the SX(O) and EX have been given the axe. Besides these, Hyundai has also discontinued the 1.6 CRDI Automatic and the 1.4-litre CRDI EX variant. The base 1.4-litre petrol and diesel variants have been replaced with the new GL.

The Hyundai Verna, for the first time in three years, slipped down to the second position in sales figures, courtesy the new  Honda City . Though the Verna has been seeing consistent sales figures,  Honda managed to sell double the number of the City sedans in the last two months. Hyundai’s move of reorganising its variant lineup seems to be a move taken to bite into Honda’s entry-level share in the segment. A facelifted Hyundai Verna is expected to be unveiled at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show in April which might give the City a tough fight. Till then though, Hyundai will have to keep coming up with innovative ways to improve its sales figures.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio launched at  Auto Expo last month receives its Automated Manual Transmission gearbox from Magneto Marelli. The company clocked 1000 bookings per month and though it had earlier anticipated 25-30% for the AMT variant, the company registered 51% booking of this variant. Local assembly of the AMT unit is slated to commence next month and this is what will bring down waiting period for the AMT variant.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio is powered by a 1.0 liter, 3 cylinder K Series petrol engine also seen on board the Maruti WagonR, Alto and the recently discontinued A-Star. This engine is capable of 67 bhp power and 90 Nm torque. The AMT powered version is more fuel efficient than the manual one and returns 23.1 kmpl which is a major reason for its popularity.

Another reason for its major attraction is the fact that unlike other automatic offerings, the price variation between Manual and Automatic variant of the Celerio is just INR 1 – 1.2 lakhs. The Celerio was launched at INR 3.90 lakhs and is not offered at INR 3.76 lakhs as the company revised prices following the recent announcements of reduction in excise duty in the interim budget. Datsun Go hatchback launched at a starting price of Rs 3.12 lakh

The Go will have a price range of Rs 3.12 lakh to Rs 3.69 lakh. It is expected to give stiff competition to Eon and Alto.
 Nissan Motor Co on Wednesday launched the Datsun Go, an entry-level hatchback at a starting price of Rs 3.12 lakh. The Go, which will come in three variants, will have a price range of Rs 3.12 lakh to Rs 3.69 lakh.

The name of the car is inspired by the first Datsun, the DAT-GO, launched almost a century ago in Japan. The word DAT means "lightning fast" in Japanese.

The Go, sporting a 1,200cc petrol engine, is built on the platform of the Nissan Micra. The 3-cylinder engine delivers power of 68PS and torque of 104NM. It does a 0-100 km/h in 13.3 seconds and a fuel economy (ARAI) fugure of 20.63 km.

With the wheelbase of 2450 mm, the GO is 3785mm long and 1635mm wide. The car also gets a good ground clearance of 170mm.

The car has several different features that include the gear lever and parking brake handle at the centre console, while the front seats do not have a space between them but are connected, that provides extra space for the passengers. The car gets three spoke steering wheel, white and blue colouring for the large speedometer that gets a digital tachometer, gear shift guide and fuel computer.

The standard audio system gets mobile docking station that allows syncing of of the smarphone with the car. It also gets the segment first feature of Follow Me Home lights.

'Go' which is a 5-seater, 5-door hatchback, is Datsun's first car in India. The entry level car, under the popular Datsun brand, is aimed at tapping the first-time car buyers. The company is reviving Datsun brand after almost three decades...

Bajaj Pulsar 200SS spotted: No news on launch date

Bajaj Auto surprised everyone when they did not showcase the Pulsar 200 SS at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. A fully faired variant of their flagship Pulsar 200 NS, the 200 SS was recently spotted near Pune while it was being tested by a rider. The new spy shots reveal the riding stance of the new Pulsar 200 SS, which is expected to be launched very soon.

Back in July 2013, it was revealed that two new Pulsar’s will be introduced in India by March 2014. These were expected to be in the form of Pulsar 200 SS and Pulsar 400 SS. While we got to see the 400 SS at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, there is no word on the 200 SS yet, which probably makes us believe that it wont be launched before the end of this month.


Anyways, Bajaj is trying their best to launch the new Pulsar motorcycles in India as early as possible. They are currently testing many new bikes, which includes the likes of 150 NS, 180 NS, 200 SS, 200 NS FI, 400 SS and 400 CS. Most of these bikes were spotted testing together earlier this year.

Recently a lone Pulsar 200 SS was spotted testing near Pune. Comparing the spyshots of these to the one’s spotted back in January 2014, we can notice that the camouflaged material has been reduced, indicating that the launch is near.

To be powered by the same single cylinder engine that powers the NS, the 200 SS is expected to feature a digital fuel injection system in addition to optional ABS. Apart from this, it will also feature monoshock suspension for the rear and telescopic forks in the front. The headlight will have projector headlamps. Overall, the 200 SS will offer a better ride and handling as compared to the 200 NS. Price will be in the range of Rs 1.15 – 1.20 lakhs, making it a direct competitor to Yamaha R15 and Honda CBR 150R...

Datsun on the brink of Indian debut

Vincent Cobee agrees that the Datsun project has perhaps been the most exciting in his career of over two decades.

“To launch a new global brand along with five cars in four years and across four markets, while shifting the positioning of a global automobile company has been quite an experience,” the Corporate Vice-President of Nissan Motor’s Datsun Business Unit told Business Line during a recent visit to India.

The Datsun Go will be launched in India next Wednesday and will mark an important strategy for Nissan in emerging markets. The brand will also make its way into Indonesia, Russia and South Africa as part of an aggressive rollout plan.
Growth plan

Nissan Motor had clearly decided about five years ago that there had to be a “third leg” in its business which has, otherwise, been largely about the “hedonistic luxury” leg represented by the Infiniti brand and the Nissan brand in the larger automobile space.

“But then we also need to cater to high growth markets and this explains the significance of Datsun. The brand is the third pillar for Nissan,” Cobee says. The challenge now is to ensure that buyers queue up for the car right from India and Indonesia to Russia and South Africa.

The sub Rs 4-lakh Datsun Go has positioned itself as a serious rival to Maruti Suzuki’s established stranglehold in this part of the world. “Of course, we respect the dominant player but it is equally true that the Indian customer is becoming more and more diverse in his aspirations. This means that he is looking for modernity, fuel economy and luxury of choice,” Cobee says.

The message is loud and clear: times are different today than what they were some years ago when choices were limited and customers had to make do with what was offered to them.

Cobee also maintains that the sub Rs 4-lakh segment in India has not particularly seen “great levels of innovation” where the focus has been more on “product renovation”. He reiterates that despite the slowdown in Western Europe and India, brands which epitomised good cars and innovative/attractive features bucked the trend and did well.

“With Datsun, we are bringing an accessible product backed by engineering capability with attractive values,” Cobee says. The brand, in his view, represents a “substantial product expansion” for the first time where tremendous innovation has taken place. “It reflects an aspirational direction and is true to what was stated when the strategy was first announced,” he adds..

 Hyundai on Wednesday launched the Xcent, a sedan based on the Grand i10 platform at a starting price of Rs 4.66 lakh. Hyundai's new sub-4 metre compact sedan will take on the MarutiBSE 0.38 % Dzire and Honda Amaze.

Xcent, which has been launched in both petrol and diesel variants has been priced between Rs 4.66 lakh and Rs 7.38 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). While the petrol variant prices range from Rs 4.66 lakh to Rs 6.47 lakh, the diesel variant prices are from Rs 5.56 lakh to Rs 7.38 lakh.

The Xcent is available in two engine options - the 1.1 litre second generation U2 CRDi diesel and the 1.2 litre Kappa Dual VTVT petrol. While the diesel mill delivers 72PS@4000 rpm of power and peak torque at 18.4kgm@1750-2500, the petrol engine churns out 83PS@6000rpm of power and 11.6 kgm@4000 rpm of peak torque.

Hyundai says the diesel will give a mileage if 24.4 kmpl, the petrol is expected to deliver mileage of 19.1 kmpl (ARAI figure). The diesel comes witha 5-speed manual transmission while the petrol gets 5-speed manual and a 4- speed automatic.

Maruti Suzuki launches Swift Dzire limited edition for Rs 6.86 lakh on road Delhi

Maruti has launched a limited edition Swift Dzire LDiX just days before the expected launch of its competitor Hyundai Xcent. The car is priced at Rs 6.86 lakh (on-road, Delhi) and is available only on the base diesel variant.

As the name suggests, it is basically the Maruti Dzire LDi, which is currently priced at Rs 6.61 lakh (on road, Delhi), with a number of additional features that are rare in the price segment.

The special edition Dzire will get 12 extra features including a music system with CD and AUX capability as well as front and rear speakers and tweeters. Other added features will include power windows, remote central locking, fog lamps in bumper, anti-theft system, passenger side vanity mirror, body coloured side mirrors with integrated turn indicators and day/night internal rear view mirror.

These features put the Dzire LDiX more at par with the premium Dzire VDi which costs Rs 7.6 lakh on road, Delhi.

Power come from the same 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine as in the Dzire LDi which produces 75PS of max power and 190Nm of peak torque. The power plant is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

Maruti is also giving exchange bonus of Rs 15,000, corporate discount of Rs 1,500 and a loyalty bonus of Rs 10,000 for the 2014 model as well as other special offers aimed at clearing the stock of its 2013 models...

With high-end features and very competitive pricing, Datsun is all set to unleash a war in the compact car segment. Ammar Alvi finds out whether it has the metal to perish others or get perished!

The Datsun Go is based on the same platform as the Nissan Micra. However, it is a complete new car, from inside and out. It isn’t the styling or design but it is the features, space and modern upmarket characteristics that make it look better than the rest. It has a bold front with a dominant chrome grille and well-defined front bumper. The rear in comparison is a bit bland but not one that can be dismissed completely. It’s the interior that truly impresses. Some of the features which will impress you include:

Gear Shift Guide

The Go has gear numbers indicated with upshift markings on its clocks alongside the speed marking. So, when the speedo needle hits that mark, one is supposed to up shift to the gear marked. This gear shift guide on the Go works when the car is driven sedately.

Trip Computer

It gives instantaneous fuel consumption and can act as a handy guide towards improving fuel economy. The average fuel consumption tells you how you have been faring as an efficient driver over the course of a tank fill. And the distance to empty—handy for those who like to use even the last drop in the tank before filling up.

Storage

It has reasonably large storage for car papers, owner’s manual, maybe even a book or water bottles in the open glove compartment. It has usable bottle holders in the front two door pockets and then there’s a little cubbyhole on the right hand side of the steering that can hold both your cellphone and wallet.

Boot Space

At 265 litres, the Datsun Go has the biggest boot among entry-level cars. In fact, its boot is larger than a few B+ hatchbacks as well.

Domestic car sales rise 1.39% in February

Car-sales
Domestic passenger car sales increased 1.39 per cent to 1,60,718 units in February from 1,58,512 units in the year-ago month.

Motorcycle sales last month climbed 5.39 per cent to 8,43,307 units from 8,00,165 units a year earlier, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Total two-wheeler sales in February rose 9.69 per cent to 12,20,012 units.

Sales of commercial vehicles were down 29.84 per cent to 47,982 units in February, SIAM said.

Vehicle sales across categories registered an increase of 4.99 per cent to 15,23,693 units from 14,51,263 units in February 2013, it added.

Small car war gets hotter with Datsun Go

A number of global car makers from Honda and Toyota in the east to Volkswagen, Skoda and Renault in the west have launched small cars to increase their presence in India. But none of them have launched a broadside at the country’s bestselling car, the Maruti Alto.

To that extent, it is a bold move on the part of Japan’s Nissan, which recently revived the Datsun nameplate, to take a shot at the collective might of the Alto and Hyundai’s Eon with its very first offering.

Its small car Go has been developed quickly, almost in a rush, and has already been on a road show in India. But does it have enough gas to give Maruti and Hyundai a scare in segments where have been untouchable — till now?

Fresh, modern design
Conventional wisdom says a car being developed for a price less than Rs. 4 lakh would be very compact and bear telltale signs of cost cutting. The Datsun Go goes against that notion, to an extent. Not only is it a bigger in dimensions compared to its peers, it also boasts of a contemporary and fresh design.

The diamond shaped grille, which will be a signature Datsun feature, lends it a bold character accentuated by the sharp lines on the sides. The rear hosts an uncomplicated boxy tail lamp cluster reminiscent of the Polo. The only gripe would be the skinny 13” tyres that undermine the car’s road presence...

Audi India Announces Heavy Discounts of upto INR 8.5 Lakh

Audi India, has announced a ‘Spring Collection’ offer for a limited period. Under this Audi Spring Collection, 275 units of A4, A6 sedans and Q5, Q7 Sports utility vehicles will be offered at special discounted prices.

The new 2014 Audi A4, with the 177 bhp 2.0 diesel motor, which retails at INR 32.81 lakh originally, will be offered at a starting price of INR 28.3 lakh for the spring collection model. The 2.0 liter A6, originally priced at INR 43.31 lakh, will be offered with a starting price of INR 36.07 lakh. Both the models are offered at a discount of INR 4.50 lakh and INR 7.24 lakh respectively.

Coming to the Audi Q range of sports utility vehicles, the 2.0-liter TDI Q5, which is originally priced at INR 45.72 lakh, will be offered at INR 37.22 lakh, which means a whopping discount of INR 8.5 lakh. The mammoth Audi Q7, with the 3.0-liter TDI in Premium+ guise, originally priced at INR 63.86 lakh, will retail at INR 56.47 lakh. The Q7 discount works out to INR 7.4 lakh, which is a whole INR 1.10 lakh less than the one on the Q5...

Seeing trucks hauling loads of goods on highways is not a rare sight but then imagine seeing a truck, coated with coloured vinyls, having sleek tyres and a high performance engine screeching its way to glory on a race track.

Impossible it may seem but it is true. Indian bred Tata Motors, the number one truck maker in the country has taken the initiative of launching truck racing in India. For this, Tata Motors has chosen its flagship Prima series of trucks. This event will be operated under “T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship” title.

It will be a one of its own kind race where 6 teams will battle out for a podium finish in their 12 specially prepared for race trucks. It has a 4038.S engine which produces 370Bhp of power at 2100 rpm and a torque of 1550Nm at 1200 to 1400 rpm. It has a 9 speed gearbox. These trucks are capable of reaching speeds in excess of 110 Km/h.

Tata Motors have meticulously worked on the details and have produced a master piece in form of these racing trucks. There are close to 22 modifications which have been introduced in a normal truck for this purpose. The driver cabin has a roll cage which fulfils the requirements of FMSCI. The steering wheel has a quick release mechanism to help the driver exit the cabin in case of an emergency. It gets FIA approved racing seats and a fire extinguisher in the cabin. It also has an external engine and fuel cut-off switch. It gets a propeller shaft guard and always ON tail lamps. Since braking plays an important role, it gets revised new generation wider brakes with liquid cooling. The suspension height have been reduced too to make it race ready. It has a 90L fuel tank which is located just behind the driver’s cabin...

Hyundai Xcent launch date announced; March 12 it is!

We reported in detail when it emerged that the Hyundai Xcent launch date will fall in next week. Now, the carmaker announced the new Hyundai Xcent launch date and the new car will step into our car market on March 12 this year.

As we have been saying, the new Hyundai Xcent compact sedan is basically a Grand i10 plus a boot. The new car is to the donor model what the Dzire is to the Swift and the Amaze is to the Brio. The new Hyundai Xcent measures less than 4 metres in length and hence, benefits from the excise duty relaxations being provided by the Government of India to such models. All this means that the car has good chances of having an ultra competitive price tag.

Talking about the car’s design, the Xcent looks exactly the same as the hatchback sibling when viewed front-on. Even when seen in profile, it is clearly evident that the doors and most other panels have been carried over. At the rear though, the car has a boot that has been integrated rather neatly into the C piller. On the inside, the car uses similar styling and arrangement from the Grand i10 hatchback...

Fiat launches new Linea

The T-Jet Active cost Rs 7.44 lakh in Delhi and Rs 7.65 lakh in Mumbai. The T Jet Dynamic version is priced at Rs 8.53 and Rs 8.77 lakh in Delhi and Mumbai respectively. The T Jet Emotion is priced at Rs 9.01 and Rs 9.27 lakh in Delhi and Mumbai, respectively.

In diesel, the Multi Jet Active will cost Rs 8.15 and Rs 8.35 in Delhi and Mumbai respectively. Multi Jet Dynamic is priced at Rs 9.27 and Rs 9.50 lakh while Multi Jet Emotion will cost Rs 9.72 and 9.96 lakh in Delhi and Mumbai, respectively.

Among the bells and whistles on offer is a new cruise control feature for comfortable and safe driving at high speeds. The new Linea also comes with safety features such as ABS with EBD, dual stage airbags along with early crash sensors.

The car is also longest in the segment with best in class ground clearance. Among the external features, it comes kitted with bigger alloy wheels, new bumper and grille, ORVM with turn indicators.

It also comes with features like rain sensing wipers, automatic on/off headlamps, reverse parking sensors, Follow Me Home headlamps. In terms of infotainment, the car packs in Fiat's 'Blue and Me TM" technology with voice commands, steering mounted audio controls, USB & Aux in inputs and unique 'car' features among others.

Nagesh Basavanhalli, president and MD, FIAT Chrysler India Operations, said, "Fiat India will also be launching more models this year and with a 100 plus dealer network and upcoming marketing initiatives, we will be in a strong position to capitalize on the competitive market."

Datsun Go vs rivals - features comparison

The Datsun Go is currently the most eagerly anticipated budget car launch in India. With an expected sub- Rs. 4-lakh price tag, the Go has caught the attention of prospective first-time car buyers. But how does the Datsun Go compare to the current small car segment favourites Maruti Alto 800 and the Hyundai Eon?  We have the details by comparing the top variants of all three competitors. 


The Alto 800 has the smallest engine among the trio. It gets a three cylinder, 796cc engine which develops a maximum power of 47bhp at 6,000rpm and a maximum torque of 7kgm at 3,500rpm. The Eon is powered by a slightly bigger three-cylinder, 814cc engine which produces a maximum power of 55bhp at 5,500rpm and maximum torque of 7.6kgm at 4,000rpm. The Go has the biggest motor among them which gives it a power advantage. The Go’s three-cylinder, 1198cc petrol motor makes a peak power of 67bhp at 5,000rpm and peak torque of 10kgm at 4,000rpm.

The top-spec Go comes equipped with a segment-first follow-me-home headlights. Apart from this, it gets body coloured bumpers on the outside. The instrument panel has an on-board computer, which displays a digital tachometer, tripmeter, distance to empty along with the average and instantaneous fuel efficiency. It also comes with an AC, power steering, front power windows, a gear shift guide, folding rear seat bench and a two-speaker audio system with aux-in and USB compatibility.

The top Alto VXI gets body coloured bumpers and outside door handles along with a chrome accentuated front grille. It also has basic equipment such as an AC, power steering and front power windows. The driver airbag is as optional extra but it gets central locking, tubeless tyres, headlight levelling and engine immobiliser. It also gets a two-speaker audio system with CD, aux-in and USB compatibility, remote fuel lid opener and tail-gate release. 

The top Eon Sportz trim comes equipped with engine immobiliser, central locking, keyless entry, front fog lamps, tubeless tyres, tilt steering and a driver airbag. On the exterior, it gets body coloured bumpers, wing mirrors and outside door handles. It also gets a dual tripmeter, gear shift indicator, front power windows, power steering, AC and a two-speaker audio system with CD, MP3, aux-in and USB compatibility. It also comes with a folding rear seat, remote fuel lid opener and tail-gate release.

In terms of dimensions, the Go measures 3,785mm in length, 1,635mm in width and has a wheelbase of 2,450mm. While the Eon is 3,495mm length, 1,550mm breadth and its wheelbase is 2,380mm wheelbase. The Alto 800 is smaller than the Eon with a length of 3395mm, width of 1490mm and a 2360mm wheelbase.

There are still no details on what variants will be available on the Go. But on the face of it, the Eon top trim comes with more equipment. But in terms of size, the new Go offers a lot more space than its competitors for similar money.
