Not long after Tata Motors announced the 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron petrol engine for its upcoming products, Maruti Suzuki is apparently set to follow suit with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine of its own. However, Maruti’s new engine is expected to be a direct injected unit compared to Tata’s MPFI. After the AMT, this motor is touted to be the next big hit for Maruti.
Financial Express reports that, according to its industry sources, the direct injection turbocharged petrol motor in question will first power the automaker’s global premium hatchback codenamed YRA that is under development. The YRA is likely to be positioned above the Swift taking the competition straight towards the likes of VW Polo and the new Honda Jazz. The new car is also expected to be Maruti’s leading export model.
With the new fuel economy norm by the government on its way, the turbocharged petrol motor with high fuel efficiency and low emission would come in handy. This move also aligns with the global downsizing trend. Given that Maruti already has the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) technology in hand, we can safely say that the company is looking forward for a promising future!
The new motor, codenamed K10C is said to have an impressive power output of 90 HP which is better than that of the conventional normally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol units in the market. The fuel efficiency would be on the brighter side of 20 kmpl. The high power output makes the motor versatile enough to power a hatchback, a sedan and even a mini SUV like the XA Alpha.
