Senior officials from the BEST undertaking have expressed helplessness at the transport ministry's directive to instal GPS on all buses by February 20. They said the state government has not given any such directive to the undertaking, because of which it is impossible to implement the guideline in a span of 10 days.
BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta said that for any new directive to be implemented, a set of guidelines should be sent to the state and local bodies. "We have not received any such guidelines so far. I have just come across media reports from Delhi," Gupta said, adding that there was a lot of ambiguity on implementing the directive. "We have begun the process of installing GPS in our buses. So far, 1,500 buses have been fitted with it. But for the rest, it will not be possible to instal GPS in 10 days," said Gupta.
All AC Cerita buses in the BEST fleet have GPS installed. As per news reports, all public transport vehicles plying in cities with over 10 lakh people "must instal GPS by Feb 20 or face action". The earlier deadline was September 30, 2013, and this was pushed to February 20, the reports mentioned.
State transport commissioner V N More said he had not received any guidelines from the Centre on installation of GPS in both buses and autos. "I was aware of such a move last year, but the Centre has not provided us with the details of the new scheme," he said.
