Cyrus Mistry interim head at Tata Motors

Cyrus Mistry
In a first after becoming the chairman of Tata Group over a year ago, Cyrus Mistry is taking on an operational role in a group company. Mistry will oversee the affairs of Tata Motors, the flagship company of the $100-illion group, in the wake of its managing director Karl Slym's sudden demise. This is an interim measure till the maker of Nano and Indica cars appoints a new head.

This arrangement by Mistry is similar to that of his predecessor Ratan Tata, who too was a hands-on leader. When Tata Motors did not have an MD for over a decade, Tata took upon himself to oversee the firm's operations; which was not surprising given his love for automobiles. India's fourth largest car maker announced on Thursday the setting up of a corporate steering committee (CSC), to be chaired by Mistry, which will "provide oversight of strategy and key aspects of the company's operations". The CSC includes all the current seven members of the company's executive committee that looks after almost all the key functions-from commercial to passenger vehicles to research, quality, finance and supply chain.

The seven members are Ravindra Pisharody, Satish Borwankar, C Ramakrishnan, T Leverton, Ranjit Yadav, Mamillapalle Venkatram, Ankush Arora and Rajesh Bagga. Mistry's involvement, said sources, ensures continuity of leadership, brings alignment between board and management as well as his personal engagement to steer and support the company.
