First Drive: Datsun GO

They say good things happen to those who wait. And so all those months of waiting, bringing you exclusive sneak peeks at the car, our moment with the Datsun Go had finally arrived. What made this drive more special was that we were the first ever journalists in the world... yes, in the world, to drive the Go hatch on the roads. With the official launch just a few weeks away and the interest levels growing, we thought we would put it on the city roads and a bit on the highway to see how the GO fares.

Let's go (pun intended) first with the looks department and this is where the GO really puts itself in a class above its segment. From the attractive hexagonal grille which will be a common link across all future Datsun models worldwide, to sharp-looking headlamps, the face of the car is very appealing. Interestingly, the headlamps come with the Follow-Me-Home activation system which automatically switch off after a pre-set time; a useful bonus feature for many first-time car buyers.

The side and rear profile of the GO is also pleasing to the eye with flowing lines and creases to accentuate the stylish design - and emphasise space. Datsun has gone with small 13 inch wheels which it claims is lighter and offers better fuel efficiency but we just think they just look disproportionate to the overall design. But we do like this Spunky Maroonish Red shade on the hatch that we drove and believe will be the popular choice among Indian buyers, although the Powder Blue - shown at the Expo, might appeal to women buyers too.
First Drive: Datsun GO

Inside the cabin, the Datsun GO tends to lose a bit of its premium exterior appeal with some dull-looking plastic, the long pull-type handbrake, and of course the front connected bench seat. We wondered and scratched our heads about the relevance of this connected seat and of course kept probing Datsun about it, which really thinks it is a more practical option for India. According to the co., the free space in the centre can be used to place a small bag or book and also sliding out from the other side is now easier in tight parking situations. We are not convinced as it opens up a safety risk if children are placed in the middle of this front bench-seat. Also what we found out during our drive, is that one's elbow will keep bumping into the seat back which is quite bothersome.

But the wow factor inside the cabin is really the space with the ample headroom and extra legroom thanks to a generous wheelbase. The seats are comfortable enough but the cushioning could be firmer especially in the rear seat. The boot is also equally impressive for an entry-level car as we could fit in most of our heavy camera equipment and luggage without a hitch. Now Datsun is offering a whole host of accessories to make the cabin more appealing like a regular stereo system or the centre-seat in front being replaced by an armrest. Airbags and ABS are not available on any of the three variants that the company will launch, but Datsun says it is studying the possibility of offering it as optional sometime in the future..

Maruti fails to allay concerns over Suzuki India plant, shares sink

Shares of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd(MRTI.NS) fell as much as 5.5 percent on Friday, after the car maker sought to allay investor concerns over its plan to source cars from a plant to be built by its parent Suzuki Motor(7269.T) in Gujarat.

A group of heavyweight fund managers holding nearly 4 percent of Maruti's stock had urged it to re-think the plan in a February 13 letter to the company's chairman, saying minority shareholders would be better off if Maruti made the cars itself.

Maruti, India's top carmaker, in a statement late Wednesday provided details on pricing and funding of capacity expansion in the proposed contract manufacturing arrangement with Suzuki, which owns 56 percent of Maruti.

Maruti shares were down 5.1 percent at 1,580 rupees by 12.49 p.m. Some analysts said the statement fell short of adequately justifying the move, which departs from Maruti's practice of making cars at its own plants in India.

Indian stock markets were shut on Thursday.

"It is clear there is no systemic efficiency gain due to this deal -- thus any value accretion to Suzuki is at Maruti's expense," Jefferies said in a research note.

Maruti has said it would buy the cars from the Gujarat plant at a price that would include only the cost of production and additional capital expenditure needs of the plant.

Maruti will also produce cars at its existing plants in Manesar and Gurgaon in north India that together have a capacity of 1.5 million vehicles per year.

Maruti Celerio: More Indians opting to buy automatic transmission

Maruti Suzuki has received bookings of around 1,000 vehicles a day since the launch of the Celerio on February 6, 2014.
In a first in the domestic automobile industry, Maruti Suzuki has received more bookings for the automatic transmission (AT) model of its latest Celerio compared to the manual transmission variant.

The company has received bookings of around 1,000 vehicles a day since the launch of the Celerio on February 6, 2014 and 51 per cent of those are in the AT category.

“This is the first time we have launched AT in this segment. Who would have thought that we would straightaway get 51 per cent bookings for AT models. Now, there will be a waiting period as the automatic transmission parts are being imported. We will import it for the first year and localise it after a year,” said Maruti Suzuki Chairman RC Bhargava in an interview.

The bookings for the AT variant have exceeded the expectations of the company, which was estimating 25-30 per cent of sales of Celerio to come from the AT variant.

Celerio has an Automatic Manual Transmission that Maruti Suzuki claims has been introduced for the first time in a passenger car in India. AMT allows the driver to use automatic or manual shift patterns at the gear lever but without physical input for the clutch.

The strong demand for the AT variants for Celerio have been triggered by the price rationalisation that Maruti Suzuki effected for Celerio AT models. The company has also kept a competitive price differential of only Rs 39,000 between the MT and AT variants of the model. Currently, AT version of a car in the market is priced higher by up to Rs 1-1.2 lakh than its manual transmission version.

The company also priced Celerio AT nearly Rs 2 lakh cheaper than comparable variants of Honda Brio and Hyundai Grand i10, which are tagged at about Rs 6 lakh.

Sales of AT variants in India contribute about just 1 per cent (25,000-26,000 units per annum) to overall passenger vehicle sales.

Peugeot to launch new hybrid car that runs on air in 2015

Peugeot to launch new hybrid car that runs on air in 2015
Hold your breath! French car maker Peugeot is all set to sell the first air-powered hybrid car from next year. With new ‘Hybrid Air’ engine system – the first to combine petrol with compressed air – the firm says the car could reduce petrol bills by 80 percent when driven in cities.

“Air power would be used solely for city driving, automatically activated below 43mph,” said Peugeot in a press release. The system combines a gasoline engine with an air engine which is used at speeds under 70mph. This enables it to run on petrol or air, or a combination of both. According to the company, by 2020, the car could achieve an average of 117 miles a gallon.

The new engine system is a breakthrough for hybrid cars because expensive batteries would no longer be needed. Cars fitted with Hybrid Air system would be cheaper to buy than current hybrid models. Drivers never run the risk of running out of compressed air because the car would have a sophisticated device that ensures it replenishes itself automatically, added Peugeot.

Microsoft may cut Windows Phone licensing fees by 70%

Microsoft may cut Windows Phone licensing fees by 70%
Microsoft is reportedly set to cut down the Windows Phone licensing fee by up to 70% in a bid to target the low-end of the smartphone market and compete with budget Android handsets.

Sources have said that once Microsoft takes control of Nokia's hardware division, a licensing fee cut is imminent, as the company aims to compete with Android devices.

According to TechCrunch, the intended purpose of the price cut is to make it possible for OEMs, like Micromax and Karbonn, to build affordable Microsoft hardware that can compete with budget Android devices.

OEM smartphone maker Infosonics, which deals in low-cost Android devices, said that the price drop was coming.

Earlier it was reported that Microsoft was looking at getting rid of the licensing fee altogether, but since the software giant still makes a good portion of its revenue from licensing its desktop OS, it is likely unwilling to cede that stream entirely.

The report said that the licensing fees for Windows Phone were between $20 and $30 as of the last word from a hardware partner, and a 70% cut would put new fees at roughly between $6 and $10 per unit.

The software giant has already lined up some low-cost manufacturing partners, including manufacturers in China and India, for getting its software in the hands of entry-level consumers, the report added.

Smart phone sales to fall sharply by 2018

Growth in global smartphone shipments would fall sharply this year and keep slowing through 2018, warns research.Growth in global smartphone shipments would fall sharply this year and keep slowing through 2018, warns research.

“Growth in worldwide smartphone shipments could drop from 39.2 percent last year to 19.3 percent this year, 8.3 percent in 2017, and 6.2 percent in 2018,” said global market firm International Data Corporation (IDC) in its latest 'Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker' report.

Average prices would drop significantly as demand shifts to China and other developing countries, IDC added.

Android would maintain its reign as the leading operating system while Apple's iOS would remain the number 2 platform behind Android in 2018.

2014 will be an enormous transition year for the smartphone market.

Not only would growth decline more than ever before, but the driving forces behind smartphone adoption would change too.

“New markets for growth bring different rules to play by and 'premium' will not be a major factor in the regions driving overall market growth,” informed IDC programme director Ryan Reit in a statement.

IDC forecasts a rise in Windows Phone's global market share from 3.9 percent this year to 7 percent in 2018.

“That may not seem like a huge leap, but such growth will outshine the market share declines predicted for the other major mobile platforms,” it added.

BlackBerry would be under constant attack from the competition. Its higher than average prices compared to other platforms could inhibit its growth potential.

Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on China where many consumers are upgrading from basic cellphones to smartphones selling cheap.

IDC expects the overall smartphone market to become more saturated over the next few years.

Samsung releases SDKs for Galaxy S5 and Gear 2 smartwatch

samsung-galaxy-s5-smartphone
SAMSUNG HAS RELEASED software development kits (SDKs) for the Galaxy S5 smartphone and Gear 2 smartwatches, which were unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

Samsung released the SDKs to bring on board as many diverse apps as possible following its latest flagship smartphone and smartwatch launches earlier this week.

As well as giving these SDKs to developers, Samsung also introduced a Gear Fit SDK that it hopes will "highlight the potential for wearable apps development".

Samsung president and head of its Media Solution Centre, Dr Won-Pyo Hong, said the release of the SDKs show how the firm will continue to provide more SDKs for its mobile devices while "maintaining collaborative relationships with development partners to present unique and unprecedented content and services to our customers".

Samsung also introduced an upgraded Samsung Mobile SDK 1.5 with finger-scanning technology and support for the motion detection function included in the Galaxy S5, as well as multi-screen technology for developing apps that can operate simultaneously on smart TV and mobile devices.

It also presented the S Health SDK to developer partners. S Health, Samsung's personalised app that uses health information accumulated through sensors, is available on various Samsung mobile devices.

Samsung unveiled the long anticipated Galaxy S5 at MWC on Monday, its latest flagship Android device that boasts a 5.1in HD display, a fingerprint scanner, a 16MP rear-facing camera and even a heart rate monitor.

It also announced two Gear smartwatches on Sunday. The Galaxy Gear 2 offers a number of improvements on the original Samsung Galaxy Gear. The first of these is Tizen, with Samsung dumping Google's Android mobile operating system in favour of its own open-source alternative. This should, according to the firm, make the latest Gear devices nippier than the original model.

Samsung's release of SDKs for these devices should see a number of apps appear to help distinguish them from rivals such as the Apple iPhone 5S and the Sony Smartwatch 2.

‘Suzuki to transfer Gujarat unit to Maruti if pact expires’

The company has clarified that Suzuki Motor Corporation’s subsidiary in Gujarat. ReutersIn an attempt to allay concerns raised by its investors, Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) on Wednesday clarified that the Gujarat manufacturing facility will be transferred to MSIL in case of expiry of the manufacturing agreement.

“If the contract manufacturing agreement expires, and in case is not extended by mutual consent, the assets of the Gujarat subsidiary would be transferred to MSIL at a fair value to be determined by independent valuation,” said MSIL. The investors have raised concerns over Suzuki Motor Corporation’s plan to build the Gujarat facility, which was earlier planned to be built by MSIL. The investors were also planning to move Sebi with the complaining.

The company has clarified that Suzuki Motor Corporation’s subsidiary in Gujarat would operate on the basis that while it would not make any losses, it would also not accumulate any cash surpluses.

Maruti seeks to allay investors' fears over Gujarat plant

To allay concerns raised by investors related to funding of the capacity expansion project in Gujarat and the pricing of cars to be manufactured by parent Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) at the said facility, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) on Wednesday clarified SMC's subsidiary in the state would operate on the basis that while it would not make any losses, it would also not accumulate any cash surpluses.

"The cost of production of vehicles, produced by the subsidiary, would be calculated in an identical manner to that followed by Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) in Haryana, and as would have been done if the Gujarat project had been executed by a 100 per cent subsidiary of MSIL. This cost may be called 'C', and would not include return on investment and profits," the company said.

Elaborating on the pricing formula of cars produced by Maruti Suzuki at its facilities in Haryana, the company said it marked up the cost of production of the car to generate profits. The mark-up includes the return on capital employed and is determined, at all times, by market conditions. The sale price to dealers, thus, includes the cost of production of the vehicle as well as the mark-up determined by the company.

To address additional queries from investors regarding the Capex plans for the Gujarat units, the company said, "The Capex needs of the Gujarat subsidiary would be met by the depreciation amount available with the subsidiary, by an amount generated as net surplus from the car pricing and by SMC infusing fresh equity, to the extent necessary."

However, the surplus added to the cost of production of the vehicle would be such as would ensure that the total ex-factory price of cars made available to MSIL remains less than the price at which Maruti Suzuki sells vehicles to its dealers. MSIL's sale price to dealers would include the cost of production as well as the mark-up determined by the company.

Suzuki may transfer its Gujarat asset to Maruti in future

Suzuki may transfer its Gujarat asset to Maruti in future
Responding to investors concerns over Suzuki Motor Corp. floating a separate subsidiary to invest in Gujarat, the BSE-listed Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) said that if its contract manufacturing deal with Suzuki expires and is not extended, the Japanese parent will transfer the Gujarat assets to Maruti at an appropriate valuation.

“If the contract manufacturing agreement expires, and in case is not extended by mutual consent, the assets of the Gujarat subsidiary would be transferred to Maruti at a fair value to be determined by independent valuation,” the company said in a statement.

The Suzuki’s subsidiary in Gujarat would operate on the basis that while it would not make any losses, it would also not accumulate any cash surpluses.

“The capex needs of the Gujarat subsidiary would be met by i) the depreciation amount available with the subsidiary, ii) by an amount generated as net surplus from the car pricing and iii) by SMC infusing fresh equity, to the extent necessary,” the company said.

To be sure, in January, Suzuki said that it will invest Rs3,000 crore for expansion in Gujarat under a new subsidiary, instead of Maruti which is sitting with a cash surplus of Rs7,000 crore. This in turn raised concerns from various shareholders, including Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) that controls 6% stake in Maruti.

In the statement, company further added that the capex needs of the subsidiary would be determined jointly by MSIL and the subsidiary, consistent with the production needs of MSIL from the Gujarat project.

Ford Ka MPV India launch in 2016

ford-ka-mpv-india-2
There is no denying the fact that the success of the Figo hatchback and EcoSport compact SUV has enabled Ford India to establish itself as one of the key players of Indian car market. Both these models, especially the EcoSport, have garnered a huge fan following among Indian car buyers and such is the demand for this compact crossover that the manufacturer has been struggling to meet the demand for its latest SUV.

However, apart from these two cars, Ford India doesn’t have any overtly successful model to speak of. Rather, the car maker has been conspicious by its absence in two hottest new segments of our car market- MPVs and Compact Sedan. Ford unveiled the sub 4m Figo compact sedan earlier this year and the model would go on sale in 2015. While this would solve half the problem, Ford will still need to come up with a MPV to capitalize on the burgeoning sales in this segment. This is exactly where the Ford Ka Concept, Figo Concept’s slightly bigger twin, comes into the picture.

The Ford Ka Concept was unveiled in Brazil just a day after Figo Concept’s debut and unlike the latter, the Ka Concept isn’t a sub-4m sedan and sits on a longer wheelbase. Visually, the biggest changes are the bigger headlights and taillamps. Apart from these and the 4m-plus credentials, there is nothing to differentiate it from the Figo Concept. While the bigger Ka Concept will never make it to India, what’s coming our way in 2016 is a MPV based on this sedan and with the Ford Ka MPV India launch, Ford India would be present in almost all the promising segments of our car market.

The Ford Ka MPV will be a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and upcoming Hyundai MPV and Honda Mobilio adversary and is expected to score high in terms of passenger comfort and style. While the car will get Fiesta’s 1.5 litre petrol and diesel motors, we won’t be too surprised to see it also getting the highly famed 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine from the EcoSport.

We also won’t be amazed to see the upcoming Ford Ka MPV mirror the success story of the EcoSport. What do you feel?

Discounted airfares a gimmick, feel residents

The much hyped ongoing discount war of airlines has been dubbed a gimmick by city residents, as many have failed to get discounted tickets despite repeated online attempts.

As part of the 'Super Summer Sale' launched on February 24, SpiceJet is offering 75% discount on the base fare for tickets booked for travel between April 1 and June 30. The booking is open till tomorrow. Rivals IndiGo and Go Air have also announced similar fare cuts.

Kamaljit Cheema from city-based Grand travel planners said the fare war was nothing short of a gimmick. "The overall discount on any flight is not beyond `1,000-1,500 -that too, with a lot of risk, since there is no refund for the discounted ticket.

One will have to travel on the same day for which he has booked the ticket, or leave his seat with no refund," he said, adding, "The discount is being offered only on basic fare, which is not more than 30-35% of the total ticket price. Even on the discounted ticket, the customers pay for fuel charges, passenger service fee, user development fee (UDF), government service tax etc., as usual."

People were facing problem in getting discounted tickets as the inventory opened for the public is very limited, said Mohinder Bajaj of Bajaj travelers. "Airlines don't open all the seats for sale as it is not beyond 5-10 seats per sector per day, which in any case are lapped by several agents' within hours of opening of these tickets. Moreover, one hardly gets the ticket."

Another local travel company owner, Puneet, said the basic fare was normally less if someone booked the ticket two-three months in advance. "The fare war is more of a branding exercise rather than offering real discounts to customers. It is a good strategy for companies as they are just selling their tickets which otherwise remain unsold in the summer season".

Another city resident, Parkash Anand, said, though Chandigarh-Mumbai ticket was available at `5,400, he could not buy it despite several attempts for the month of May. A local official of Spicejet said there was no direct sale in the counter for discounted tickets as it was only available online.

The 2014 Ford Fiesta facelift has been spotted one Indian roads for the first time. The mid-size sedan was caught while making test runs near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. We covered the Auto Expo unveil of the car live earlier this month and did a detailed pictorial first impressions review of the it based on its pictures from the Expo. The new Fiesta facelift sports a number of design elements never quite seen on the car in previous avatars. Ford had revealed that the car will hit the production line in mid or late 2014 and these pictures of the new Fiesta being tested tell us Ford is making good on that promise.

The Fiesta test mule caught testing in Chennai wore  ‘Copper Pulse,’ the same colour that the unit showcased at Auto Expo 2014 had been given. This colour was introduced with the facelift and is not available on earlier editions of the Fiesta. One external component that has received a lot of attention is the grille. Comparisons have been drawn between the new grille on the Fiesta and the trademark Aston Martin grille. It has also been featured on the new Ford Figo sedan concept, a car that is being pegged to redefine the segment on launch.

Though the new visual profile is an important aspect of the 2014 Ford Fiesta facelift, there is also another important selling point. The company’s new in-car connectivity suite, Ford SYNC in combination with Applink, will make it one of the first car makers in India to offer such a feature. The mobile-inspired dash will allow users to communicate with their devices using voice-controlled commands. Touch interfaces on cars are rather unintuitive and it’s about time manufacturers caught up with the kind of technology that would make the use of smartphones and other such devices easier during driving. Next-gen Etios to get better styling

Toyota’s Etios saloon was received with tepid response. The carmaker is citing boxy styling as one of the reasons for the slow start.   “Design is one issue and you will see that the new version will have a much better design,” said Hisayuki Inoue, CEO Asia-Pacific operations, Toyota.

The company feels that the Etios’ inherent strengths of fuel efficiency, space and durability “have not been appreciated by the young customers in the cities”. Inoue also confirmed that the company is studying the market and customer preferences before incorporating any changes.

According to sources, the new Etios will come with a completely new ‘top hat’ and will bear little resemblance to the robust but boxy shape of the current model. The new Etios, expected in mid-2015, is also looking at other body styles on the Etios. According to sources, a compact SUV is under consideration, although it hasn’t been signed off yet. The Etios Cross, which was shown at the Auto Expo, will test the response to a crossover concept, and is the first of a series of more stylish variants that can be expected on the Etios platform.

Official – Nissan India discontinues X-Trail and 370Z

Nissan X-Trail-Limited EditionNissan India has sent out a statement today announcing the discontinuation of the X-Trail SUV and the 370Z sportscar. The company will continue to sell the Teana however.

This move will allow the company to “focus on its locally manufactured models”, the press release states. While sales figures of the 370Z are unavailable, Nissan sold a total of 7 units of the X-Trail in the January-December 2013 period.

Apart from the Teana, all of Nissan India’s products (Micra Active, Micra, Sunny, Evalia and Terrano) are made at the group alliance plant in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu.

Both, the X-Trail and the 370Z were brought into India via the CBU (Completely Built up Unit) channel. In 2010 though, the X-Trail was locally assembled from CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits.

The X-Trail was offered in India in three trim levels, all of which were powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine outputting 149 PS at 4,000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm. While transmission options included a 6-speed manual and automatic, all variants came with a 4WD system. The X-Trail was priced from INR 22.75 to INR 26.96 lakhs, ex-Showroom, New Delhi.

The 370Z was powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine producing 333 PS at 7,000 rpm and 363 Nm of torque at 5,200 rpm. The sportscar was available with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed automatic in India.

Nissan Stops Selling Some High-End Vehicles in India

Japanese auto maker Nissan Motor Co. will no longer sell its high-end X-Trail sports-utility vehicle or its 370Z sports car in India as it focusses more on less expensive, locally-manufactured vehicles.

The decision to discontinue the X-Trail and 370Z models is in line with plans to “concentrate on products tailored for India and delivering more value” to Indian customers,” Nissan Motor India Pvt. said in a statement.

Nissan will continue to sell the Teana premium sedan–which is assembled largely from imported parts. It would also sell the Micra range of hatchbacks, Sunny mid-size sedan, Evalia multipurpose vehicle and Terrano SUV which are produced in India.

Nissan didn’t find a single buyer for the 370Z sports car in India in the 22 months ended Jan. 31. It sold just seven X-Trail SUVs during April 2013 to January 2014, compared with 59 a year earlier.

Overall, sales of Nissan’s vehicles in India declined 11% to 29,303 autos during the April to January period.

Nissan is scheduled to start selling the first inexpensive cars from its resurrected Datsun brand in India from next month.

Ford Motors to have 24-hour shifts to meet demand

The company plans to produce 1,60,000 units in 2014 by operating the plant in three shifts. The plan is to take it to 2,00,000 cars with vendors’ support.
The Indian car industry is in the middle of a downturn, but Ford Motor's Indian unit is planning a round-the-clock manufacturing programme at its Chennai plant to meet local as well as overseas demand for its compact SUV EcoSport. The plant will operate 24 hours from the second half of 2014, a first in Ford's 17-year presence in India.

The company plans to produce 1,60,000 units in 2014 by operating the plant in three shifts. The plan is to take it to 2,00,000 cars with vendors' support. Ford India will, thus, join its South Korean rival Hyundai — also at Chennai plant — in operating with three shifts.

Ford currently makes about 350 units of EcoSport a day. It plans to increase it to 450 units per day by June. By October, the plant will produce 750 to 850 units a day to meet demand from Europe and Japan. Ford India is working with vendors to ramp up their capacity to meet the high demand.

The move comes at a time when block closures have become a norm due to a declining market. Ford India spokeswoman said the company continues to evaluate opportunities to remove bottlenecks for reducing the waiting period. "Given the dynamic and challenging times across the industry and low consumer sentiment, we continue to monitor the situation and will adjust our production to match the demand for our products. We do not comment on specific production volumes," the spokeswoman said.

After the launch of EcoSport at an aggressive price, Ford India garnered massive bookings of over 60,000 units; the company delivered 35,000 units by January. While it is good news for the company , its inability to deliver more vehicles is leading to a lot of frustration among the waiting customers .

In fact, some of them have been compelled to pay Rs 1 lakh more after paying the booking amount, as Ford India has made two price increases in the last 9-12 months. "I don't think they will be happy, but the responses have been overwhelming . We are looking at how to enhance the capacity. Price changes have been driven due to macro-economic environment and we are in touch with each of the customers and there is enough transparency," said Tom Chackalackal, ED, manufacturing , Ford India.

Rich and famous get battle-mobiles

Once a privilege reserved for heads of states and top public personalities, armoured cars are gradually making inroads into the mainstream luxury car market as film stars, businessmen and even local politicians are buying these exclusive, and highly expensive, vehicles to ensure protection when on the move. "As wealth increases, so does threat perception. Some people even buy additional vehicles for their family and loved ones," says a senior official with one of the manufacturers.
Rich and famous get battle-mobiles

An estimated 30 to 40 cars are selling annually at the moment across major metros and Punjab, and while it's less than 10% of the ultra luxury car market (cars priced above a crore) for now, industry insiders claim it's a growing number. One of the most recent buyers of an armoured Mercedes SUV for Rs 2 crore is a film star, who is taking no chances with his safety in real life though he relies on his acrobatics to escape attack on screen.

German makers like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi are some of the manufacturers offering high-safety models in India. The body shells of these vehicles are equipped to withstand exceptional armed attacks and can take on hardcore munition from an AK47 or sniper rifles. They also have run-flat tyres that can go at a speed of 80 kmph even after being completely deflated by a bullet. Even the glass used on the car is special quality and carries an additional layer of polycarbonate on the inside to give high strength and shatter-proofing quality.

The interest in these cars prompted Mercedes-Benz to bring in its Guard vehicle (armoured version) on the ML 500 SUV range at this year's Auto Expo in Delhi. "Indians are in love with SUVs, and we thought that this version of the Guard vehicle would have higher acceptance in the market," says Eberhard Kern, MD of Mercedes-Benz India. Audi had previewed its top-of-the-line A8L sedan in an armoured model at the Delhi Motor Show in 2012. "Safety is indeed the ultimate luxury. The Audi A8 L Security sedan is the most spacious high-security vehicle in its class. We have seen high levels of interest for this car from industrialists and several high-profile clients," says Joe King, head of Audi India. There are also some unorganized sector players in regions like Punjab and south India who offer after-market armouring on mainline SUVs at a lower cost. However, protection level in these cars is not as adequate.

The special protective guard means that these vehicles are many times heavier than their regular versions. For example, the Mercedes S-Class armoured vehicle weighs 1.5 tons more than a regular S-Class. They also come at a hefty price — the armoured S-Class costs Rs 10-12 crore as against the Rs 1.6-crore regular price tag.

Due to their additional weight and other safety characteristics, Mercedes-Benz provides driver training. "It is important that the drivers get a feel of the car. So when a customer purchases one, he can send two drivers to Germany for a two-day driver training programme," a top company official says.

Details about buyers are a closely-guarded secret, and even the vehicles look like regular models, mainly to conceal their special-protection features. "The idea is to hide the fact that the owner is travelling in an armoured vehicle that has the capacity to provide protection against terrorist attacks and organized crime," says a top official with one of the manufacturers, requesting anonymity. "Such is the secrecy around the vehicles and their owners that we have been asked by the elite special protection group (SPG) against sharing any information about the vehicle characteristics being used by state protectees."

But their presence with state heads is well-known. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's convoy consists of armoured 7-Series BMWs, and his security apparatus has similarly-protected BMW X5 SUVs. On the other hand, the President's car is a Mercedes Benz S600L Pullman that also provides cover from military-standard small-arms projectiles and fragments from hand grenades and other explosives.

Now, thanks to the information we got from the official Facebook page of Fiat India, it has emerged that the Indian subsidiary of Fiat has already started dolling out discounts on the Linea Classic, probably all in an attempt to promote the Classic as a more economical offering than the upcoming Linea facelift. This way, not just the pre-facelift Linea Classic will come across as a more value-for-money offering, it will help bestowing the Linea facelift with a more premium image.

The diesel variant of the Fiat Linea Classic is powered by a 1.3 litre Multijet diesel engine, albeit, with a Fixed Geometry Turbo. This engine comes from the Punto and endows the Linea Classic with just enough power to make it a decent performer. The petrol variant is powered by the 1.4 litre four cylinder FIRE engine that never enabled the Linea to post new records at the drag strip. The very delicious 1.4 litre, turbocharged T-Jet engine has been reserved for the Linea facelift and is no longer available with the pre-facelift model. Read more..

The Sunny gets a new front grille and bigger headlamps, while the rear also gets a major overhaul. Maruti investors oppose Suzuki’s plant in Gujarat

Maruti Suzuki
At least seven fund houses have raised a red flag over Suzuki's plan to set up a manufacturing facility in Gujarat and asked for a "rethink", arguing that the move is "neither fair" nor in the interest of its 56%-owned Indian arm, Maruti Suzuki, and its minority shareholders.

Axis Mutual Fund, DSP Blackrock, HDFC MF, Prudential ICICI, Reliance MF, SBI MF and UTI, which are shareholders in Maruti Suzuki, have also complained about royalty payments by the country's largest carmaker to its Japanese parent. "Complete clarity and transparency on these issues is needed so that further damage to minority shareholders is avoided... MSIL should do everything possible to ensure that this trust is restored and maintained for ever," the fund houses said in a joint letter to the Maruti Suzuki chairman last week.

On Jan 28, the company's board had announced a decision to let Suzuki Motor Corporation set up a 100% subsidiary in Gujarat. Maruti Suzuki will source products from this facility, it had said.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio AT trumps demand for manual variant, bookings at over 500 vehicles a day

In a first in the domestic automobile industry, Maruti Suzuki has received more bookings for the automatic transmission (AT) model of its latest Celerio compared to the manual transmission variant.

The company has received bookings of around 1,000 vehicles a day since the launch of the Celerio on February 6, 2014 and 51 per cent of those are in the AT category.Maruti Celerio AT is nearly Rs 2 lakh cheaper than comparable variants of Honda Brio, Hyundai Grand i10, which are tagged at about Rs 6 lakh.

In developed markets such as the US and Japan, more than 90 per cent of.

Suzuki, Honda look at more India synergies to tighten belts

Japanese automobile majors like Suzuki and Honda, which have extensive two-wheeler and four-wheeler businesses in India, may be looking to increase their synergies in an effort to cut costs and tighten belts. Both auto majors already employ some degree of synergy between their passenger vehicle and two-wheeler operations but the ongoing slowdown could actually prompt greater synergy say automobile experts.

Take Suzuki Motor India and Maruti Suzuki. The car company has enviable distribution and sourcing strength in India given that it is the market leader. The two-wheeler company on the other hand is a much smaller operation looking to use synergy to improve sourcing costs. Atul Gupta, EVP-sales and marketing, Suzuki Motorcycle India, said: "There are several areas where greater synergy with Maruti will work well for us. For instance, in the purchase of raw materials, particularly inputs like aluminium, we would like to have synergy with Maruti because their scale can get us much better rates."

Purchasing isn't the only area that SMI is interested in pursuing greater synergy with Maruti. "There can also be greater synergy in some back end areas like say, human resource," said Gupta. "There's already some synergy in terms of the engineering and R&D done from Japan given that we have a common parent." But the real step up will happen when both companies use Maruti's Rohtak R&D facility. "There will be a time when we will use Maruti's Rohtak R&D facility but we're not sure about a time frame for that," said Gupta.

Fellow Japanese MNC Honda has a far more significant footprint in two wheelers than in passenger vehicles. The company already has a common sourcing strategy in place both for its two and four wheeler business. Jnaneswar Sen, senior VP - marketing & sales, Honda Cars India said: "We already have Honda Motor India which handles spare parts operations for both four and two wheelers. For now, we don't have any further synergy strategies beyond the parts operations." Honda, which has tasted success with its Amaze compact sedan and the new City has lined up two new launches in 2014 - the Mobilio mid size multi purpose vehicle and the relaunched Jazz hatchback.

Ahead of polls, auto cos in FM's TN to reap excise gains most

The excise cuts announced in Monday's interim budget, which have revived hopes for an auto industry rebound, may not have been based only on economic considerations.

The excise cuts were initially perceived as well-meaning efforts of a government responsive to the plight of the ailing sector.

Now it transpires finance minister P Chidambaram may well have infused the budgetary exercise with political calculations.

The auto sector has a large presence in Tamil Nadu, Chidambaram's home state. With the Lok Sabha elections round the corner, a fillip to the industry could prove timely.

A back-of-the-envelope calculation shows that the auto industry in and around Chennai – the state capital enjoys the reputation of being the Detroit of India – will benefit by at least Rs 100-120 crore over the next four months, by way of lower excise payments. That's 30% of Rs 300-400 crore that the government is expected to forego due to excise cuts, said analysts.

Seven out of the top 20 global automotive manufacturers have a base in Chennai, offering employment to thousands. What's more, Ashok Leyland, Nissan Motor India, Renault India, the Nissan-Ashok Leyland joint venture, Ford India, Hyundai Motor India, Tafe tractors, Royal Enfield and Yamaha all have factories in Tamil Nadu. German luxury carmaker BMW India has an assembly plant in the state as well.

Other Indian vehicle-makers such as TVS and Hindustan Motors have operations in the state.

All these companies make a range of vehicles, including two-wheelers, cars, a variety of utility vehicles and commercial vehicles, all of which are beneficiaries of excise cuts.

But not everyone is convinced that Chidambaram's sudden professed sensitivity to the auto industry's problems will translate into votes come the April-May elections.

"The excise cuts are unlikely to benefit him. However, the timing (of the announcement) could have been better," said an auto consultant who did not want to be identified.

Another expert said the Index of Industrial Production or IIP, representing the entire manufacturing sector, has been dismal of late, so the government should not have been so selective about the auto sector alone.

"Why is the largesse limited to only the auto sector? We need to rev up MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) as well. But no remarkable initiatives have come on that front," said another analyst on condition of anonymity.

On Monday, Chidambaram had reduced excise duty on SUVs (sports utility vehicles) from 30% to 24%. For small cars, two-wheelers and commercial vehicles, the excise duty has been brought down to 8% from the current 12%. Read the report and graphic alongside for additional details.

Mitsubishi to launch 5 new cars in India by 2016 including Mirage hatchback

Mitsubishi Attrage sedan
Last year, Mitsubishi announced that it would focus only the Pajero Sport and Montero SUV for the Indian market, and models such as the Cedia Sports, Outlander and Evo X were given the axe. A company official later said that an automatic transmission for the Pajero Sport and the new 2014 Outlander were considered for a launch in India in 2014-15.

According to a report on Autocar Professional, Mitsubishi will launch as many as five new models in India by 2016. Mitsubishi’s executive officer and corporate general manager (Asia and ASEAN office), Ken Horinouchi confirms that a new model strategy is being developed for India.

The new strategy will see cars as small as the Mirage and Attrage launch in the country. This in turn will see Mitsubishi competing directly with mass-market manufacturers such as Maruti, Honda and Hyundai.

The Mirage is a small hatchback the size of the Honda Brio and is powered by a 1.2-liter three-cylinder petrol engine mated to a CVT gearbox. The Attrage is the sedan version of the Mirage, though at 4.24 meters in length, it is not a compact sedan by Indian standards.

Mitsubishi Mirage front
While the cars may initially be imported from ASEAN markets, local assembly at HM’s Chennai facility will take place at a later stage, reports Autocar Professional. It must also be mentioned that Mitsubishi does not have a small-displacement diesel engine in its portfolio. This could prove to be a problem in India which prefers the diesel fuel thanks to its comparatively lower cost and higher fuel efficiency.
