Moving up in class for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class doesn’t involve a change of name, but it does mean that a wider array of luxury content goes hand in hand with a new body, platform and drivetrain.
With the recent arrival of the smaller CLA-Class, the Alabama-built C-Class transfers to a more elevated perch on Mercedes-Benz’s family tree. But along with a promotion, the sedan has been re-sized and re-energized. (New coupe, wagon, plug-in hybrid and performance AMG versions will follow in calendar year 2015.)
Compared to the outgoing model, the new C-Class is 3.7 inches longer, 1.6 inches wider and the distance between the front and rear wheels is extended by three inches. Mercedes-Benz confirms that the gains mostly benefit rear-seat passengers, which was a particular weakness with the previous “C,” and trunk space is now dramatically increased.
C-Class passengers and their gear are enclosed in a completely new skin that Mercedes affirms is 154 pounds lighter, due to an increased use of aluminum body panels. Total weight is reduced by about 220 pounds, which is impressive given the C-Class’s enlarged dimensions...
