Tata Motors, Mahindra report weak sales in May 2014

Tata Motors sales fell 24% during the month of May 2014. The company sold a total of 37,525 units during May 2014 as against 49,304 units in May 2013. This dip in demand was noted both where domestic passenger and where commercial vehicle sales were concerned, falling 24% to 34,334 units in May 2014 as compared to 45,430 units sold in May 2013.

Taking sales of passenger vehicles into account, the company sold 9,230 units in May 2014, down 17% as compared to 11,134 units sold in May 2013. These included 6,932 units of Nano, Indica and Indigo models and 2,298 units of Sumo, Safari, Aria and Venture SUVs. Sales of commercial vehicles came down from 34,269 units sold in May 2013 to 25,104 units sold in May 2014, a dip of 27%.

A similar case of sales decline was reported by Mahindra & Mahindra whose total sales dipped by 12.86% during the month of May 2014. The company experienced total sales to the tune of 37,869 units as against 43,460 units sold in May 2013. Domestic sales dipped from 42,104 units in May 2013 to just 35,499 units in May 2014. Commercial vehicle sales saw a 13.55% decline from 14,848 units in May 2013 to 12,836 units in May 2014 while exports were more positive with a 74.77% increase from 1,356 units exported in May 2013 to 2,370 units exported in May 2014..
